Why do people believe that wearing the cross is a form of showing your christian?

My question is this, If like the chistians say jesus was cruxified on the cross why do the chistian faith adorn this. Isnt it a form of torture? Why would you want to hang something on your neck or hang on your walls in homes when it was a torture mechanism? I have a feeling people will say its to remember what he went through, but would you like a loved one that died some how have an ordanment made of how he died hanging on someone's neck?
