Why do people continue to use Batting Average as a stat?

I guess it just depends on how you value a player. Sure, batting average has its flaws but fair and simple, it just measures the hits per ABs ratio. Sounds like a pretty universal stat that most people can recognize and understand. It's unreasonable to expect the mes of people watching baseball to necessarily know what OPS means.
