Why does the battery get so hot when starting her 1990 FXR?

Sounds like there might be too much resistance in the battery cables or the connections. You can reduce the resistance by removing any corrosion of the terminals, terminal ends. and also check the cables for wear, integrity and internal breakage. You may want to consider larger diameter battery cables to decrease the resistance and drop the batteries temperature.
