EPSXe help?? Is my computer just too old?

Before I start, I'd just like to make clear that I own a PlayStation, but no leads, and I also own all the games I am trying to play. (I downloaded this so I could play games I used to like when i was much younger, and wouldn't bother playing any ones I don't own) For most games, I can just use the disc, but for a particular favourite, Final Fantasy VII, my disc 1 no longer works. I downloaded another copy of disc 1, and unlike all the other games I have played using discs, it works up until I enter the first battle. The two guards run up to me, and then it becomes immobile and the music crashes. I've tried with all different settings, and a friend (whose settings I copied just to make sure) has the exact same game file, which works perfectly fine. My friend is on Vista and I am on XP, my computer is much older. Does anyone know if there's something else I should download, or is my computer just too old to be playing such large games??
